“Shout out to our guide Christina. Despite heavy traffic in Bucharest, she was more than accommodating with our slower pace and the slower pace of my father. There are so many little communist buildings in random areas that you’d miss. I really enjoyed seeing the Securitate office (now a random building in a run-down area) and the old communist food line! I loved the communist snack she gave me! If you’re in Bucharest and love history, please take this tour. Kind regards, Alex”

“Our tour guide Stefan was an excellent guide: our tour lasted almost 3 hours, but felt like 1 hour. He shared with us very interesting information about Romanian communistic past and showed hidden spots of Bucharest. At the same time, his stories were not overloaded with historical fact, but were light and witty. Time well spent!”

Bucharest: Museum of Communism Ticket with Communist Coffee

9.Museum of Communism Ticket with Communist Coffee

★★★★★★★★★★4.6 · 52 reviews · 1 day · from $10

Review of Bucharest’s Museum of Communism, with hands-on exhibits, English help, and a cup of 1980s nechezol coffee.

“A nice small private museum in the old town, 45 min to 1 hour, good for a quick stop. Probably more fun with others than solo as there are photo ops, dressing up, music etc. Very interactive. Some of the text felt simplistic and described things that were very normal everywhere in the 1950s-1990s as being evils of communism. They could maybe do with a more expert or broadly expert historian on staff. Communist coffee was a very fun novelty and quite tasty, I can't tell the difference between it and Nescafe but I am not a conniseur at all! Toilet facilities clean, nice small bar area, no gift shop.”

“We enjoyed our tour with Elena. She met us at our rented apartment and we took the Metro together to get downtown. She helped us to understand the history of Romania over the last 100 years - focusing on the impacts of the communist regime. She shared photos with us which helped us comprehend some of the changes which occurred. We covered a lot of ground - but were not rushed - we even had a few rest stops! I’d recommend that you book a private tour with Elena. She can share with you in the first person as her family lived through the experience of the communist regime and…”

“A very interesting and informative tour, I don't think I've ever learned so much about communism than in the 2.5 hours spent with Alex. I really liked that he started with the philosophy of Hegel, Marx and Engels, and then talked about the feudal system in eastern Europe and the Bolshevik revoltion. This created the context for understanding better why communism emerged and then developed as it did in Romania. A great lesson of history combined with a nice walk, I definitely recommend it!”

“In rather diffucult winter conditions, snow, ice and salt!, I had an excellent walk with my local guide Mihai Vataselu. I learnt so much about the history and the background of Bucharest and not at least about what happened during the last year of communism. We walked down the old main street Calea Victoriei packed with historic buildings and events from the revolution. His knowledge and presentation were outstanding. The tour could not follow the original plans, as I was there during the big demonstrations in February. The People's Palace was therefore closed for visitors. But for Mihai it was no problem to improvise and include other elements in the…”
